337 pp. Drawn from Mark Twain's memories of his childhood in Hannibal, Missouri, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) has come to epitoize small-town boyhood. Scenes like Tom tricking other boys into whitewashing the fence or Tom, Huckleberry Finn, and Joe Harper floating down the river on a raft are now part of American Lore. Tom and Huck often expressed a desire to escape the confines of civilization, and in Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894), Huck narrates their adventures crossing the Atlantic in a baloom. The boys, alone with Jim, the former slave, travel through the Sahara and the Near East, encountering Bedouins and lions before returning home. In Tom Sawyer, Dettective (1896), Twain adapted a seventeenth-century Danish murder case to nineteenth-century America and allowed Tom and Huck to play sleuths. A diamond robbery, a false accusation of murder, and a case of mistaken identity contribute to the convoluted plot.
