767, [1] pp. Includes 1396 images reproduced from original photographs, 267 in full color. In its final form, the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad possessed a system totaling 647.07 miles. This mainline trackage spanned the distance between Rome & Watertown, Syracuse & Massena (Springs, Richland and Suspension Bridge (via Oswego), Syracuse and Fulton, and Utica and Ogdensburg. There were also branch lines to Sackets Harbor, Cape Vincent, and Clayton. This was the HOJACK, an employee term of endearment of indeterminate origin. After the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad took possession of the railroad in 1891, it formed the RW&O Division that utilized the former RW&O component lines and also added three other railroads into its Divisional fold. Thus, the total all-time route mileage for the RW&O Division became 712.12. HOJACK is the story of the RW&O Railroad and Division formation, its glorious years of industrial and agricultural prosperity, and its eventual demise as a component of the New York Central System. Parts of the railroad remain in operation today, and HOJACK explores these, too.
