First edition. Boards rubbed with corners exposed, foxed throughout, endpapers a bit soiled with a series of punctures on rear free endpaper.

xv, 467 pp. Brown cloth, gilt titles and decorations, blind stamped decorative borders. Includes fold-out map engraved by W. Kemble, engraved frontispiece of Victoria, Hong Kong, engraved plates in text (12 total). Smith was was a missionary in China and the Bishop of Victoria (the Anglican bishop in Hong Kong) from 1849 to 1865, the first of this newly established diocese. He learned Mandarin well enough to conduct church services, and oversaw missionary work in China and Japan.
