The Exeter Riddle Book (The Folio Society)

London: The Folio Society, 1978. Burnett, Virgil. First Thus. Hard Cover. Near Fine / Near Fine. Item #2353630

First thus (Ford-Smith Folio 76 #436). Includes publisher's slipcase. Slipcase lightly rubbed, otherwise an exceptional copy. Publisher's insert laid in. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked.

139, [1] pp. Translated, with an introduction, by Kevin Crossley-Holland, frontispiece and headpieces to riddles by Virgil Burnett, some of which hint at their solutions. The Exeter Book riddles are a fragmentary collection of verse riddles in Old English found in the later tenth-century anthology of Old English poetry known as the Exeter Book. Today standing at around ninety-four (scholars debate precisely how many there are because divisions between poems are not always clear), the Exeter Book riddles account for almost all the riddles attested in Old English, and a major component of the otherwise mostly Latin corpus of riddles from early medieval England.
