Originally created to be a radio-show narrator, and indeed still appearing on radio (with some episodes voiced by Orson Welles), the character of The Shadow was adapted as a character by Gibson and the publishers Street & Smith for their Detective Story Magazine. Its popularity led to the general adoption of the idiom it coined: 'Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?'
