252, viii, 9-252 pp. 8vo. Two books in one volume. Engraved frontispieces for both works, engraved title page and cuts for 'Beauties'. Only 9 copies of 1856 printing - which was the first to include Beauties of American History - in OCLC. Includes biographical sketches of Daniel Boone, Samuel Adams, Abigail Adams, General Robert E. Lee, Martha Washington, and the Marquis de Lafayette, as well as accounts of famous battles, the Boston Massacre, etc. The author was a Congregational minister, founded the Ladies' Magazine, edited the Literary Advertiser and the Gospel Advocate, served as headmaster of the Cornhill School for Young Ladies, and was a member of the committee of Boston public schools and the American Antiquarian Society. He wrote numerous works of nonfiction, most notably his General Biographical Dictionary.
