A firsthand account of the 1854 expedition to the city of Aden, part of a commission from the Royal Geographical Society to explore the East African coast with John Hanning Speke. Burton later attempted to discover the source of the Nile and became the first European known to have seen Lake Tanganyika, though he is best known for his authoritative translation of the Arabian Nights.
