A detailed monograph on the lilac, with descriptions of their colors based upon Robert Ridgway's 'Color Standards and Color Nomenclature.' McKelvey's interest in landscape design led to volunteer work at the Arnold Arboretum, during which time she became enamored of their growing collection of lilacs. This resulting monograph, the only one on the topic, received the Schaffer Medal of the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society.
