Third and first editions of four works that were not collected as a set until 1801. Attractively rebound in uniform contemporary calf. Edges discolored, boards a bit soiled, joints weakening, spine leather drying a bit, bookplate of J. Talbot Clifton of Kildalton on front endpapers, ink name and date on front flyleaves.
Full leather, red and green morocco spine label, gilt titles and decorations, marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispieces by Basire and Isaac Taylor. The author was a politician and grammarian greatly influenced by the works of Aristotle, and best known for his 1751 work Hermes, a philosophical examination of universal grammar. These works comprise traditional philosophical teachings on formal logic, first principles, physics, metaphysics, the arts, emotion, etc.
