In the last years of the 19th century, Félix Bernard (1863–1898), a young and bright invertebrate paleontologist, worked as an assistant at the Paris Museum of Natural History where he was Gaudry's colleague, and where had been trained by Ernest Munier-Chalmas (1843–1903), an unconventional but sharp geologist and invertebrate palaeontologist.
