64 pp. 16 x 11 1/2. LeRoy Neiman (1921–2012) was an American artist known for his brilliantly colored, expressionist paintings and screenprints of athletes, musicians, and sporting events. He occupies a unique superstar position in pop culture while also standing alone... an original in the art community. Although LeRoy Neiman is known as the premier artist of the sporting world, his interests ranged over the entire contemporary scene. Neiman was a natural practitioner of poster art in which the image must communicate instantly and unforgettably with the passerby. All the events spotlighted by the posters contained in the book received a special accolade from the artist. Out of the thousands of things he saw and places he had been, Neiman chose these to draw the public’s attention to. Posters include the Robert F. Kennedy Celebrity Tennis Tournament in 1970; the New Jersey State Opera Ball in April 1979; the Frazier-Ali fight, the 'Thrilla in Manilla' in the Philippines in 1975; the Newport Jazz Festival in 1979; the 1975 World Series; the Vince Lombardi Memorial Football Game in 1979; Bill Bradley's U.S. Senate run in 1978; the NBA All-Star Game in Milwaukee in 1977; the poster advertising his one-man show in Springfield in 1974; the St. Paul Ramsey County Bicentennial; the Ali-Foreman Fight in Zaire in 1974; the “Bebop Era” New York Jazz Museum Festival in 1973 featuring Charlie 'Bird' Parker and Dizzy Gillespie; the Chicago Tribune Boul-Mich Bike Rally in 1978; and Sinatra in Concert at Carnegie Hall in April 1978… and many, many more.
