Archaeological Investigations in the Upper Susquehanna Valley, New York State, in Two Volumes

Buffalo, New York: Persimmon Press Monographs in Archaeology, 1993. Large Softcover. Near Fine. Item #2334098

Volume 1: Spine faded, sticker on rear cover, a few light creases and light smudges. Volume 2: near fine.

390; 632 pp. Two volume set. Fold-outs, diagrams, photographs, and tables throughout. The two volume set is critical for archaeologists working in New York, and the broader Middle Atlantic and New England regions. Volume 1 presents the results of a decade-long multidisciplinary research program on the prehistory in the Upper Susquehanna. Over 20 sites were excavated, many with repeated occupations of the Archaic and Woodland periods. The project added a vast body of information about the prehistoric occupation and environmental history of the region. The various chapters cover the project's research design, environmental contexts, background information on European contact, and synthetic treatments of the project's results. Archaeological Investigations In The Upper Susquehanna Valley, New York State Volume 2 provides detailed accounts of the investigations of 25 archaeological sites. Also included in Volume 2 are "Palynological and Radiometric Analyses of Organic Samples from Archaeological and Non-Archaeological Localities." It presents an essential source of data and interpretations on the human and natural histories of the upper Susquehanna River valley; a comprehensive treatment that is unlikely to be duplicated soon in New York or the greater Northeast.
