A condensation of the ethical theories of eight important philosophers, including: Thomas Hobbes; Lord Shaftesbury (Anthony Ashley-Cooper); Francis Hutcheson; Bishop Joseph Butler; David Hume; Jeremy Bentham; John Stuart Mill; and Professor Alexander Bain. Laurie provides footnotes and a brief preface explaining the purpose of the work, and how it differs from his earlier publication Philosophy of Ethics. Laurie later became Bell Professor of Education at Edinburgh University, gave a series of philosophy talks called The Gifford Lectures, and campaigned for educational reform (specifically better training of teachers) in Scotland.
