First edition (Sabin 57368, TPL 3299). Includes folding map preceding frontispiece and title page. Tiny chip from right edge of fold-out map, beginnings of splits at a few seams with minor tape repairs on reverse. Boards rubbed with a few spots, owner bookplate on rear endpaper.

158 pp. Brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt titles, gilt decorations on spine. Illustrated with maps and numerous engravings from original sketches. Folding map of steamboat and railroad routes, engraved frontispiece, 20 engraved plates, engraved in-line illustrations throughout text. This work was compiled by James Van Cleve, the treasurer of Ontario and St. Lawrence Steamboat Company, known for his maritime illustrations and work surrounding Great Lakes history. Van Cleve was based in Oswego, NY, and rendered most of the views reproduced in this work's engravings. These include Ogdensburg, Cape Vincent, Lewiston, Fort Niagara, the Sackett's Harbor ship house, Clayton, Ontario, Montreal, Cape Diamond, Quebec, the Thousand Islands, and several of Niagara River and the falls.
