The author's grandfather was a patron of the philosopher John Locke, and Locke educated him using the principles expounded in his Some Thoughts Concerning Education. His philosophical work was limited to ethics, religion, and aesthetics where he highlighted the concept of the sublime as an aesthetic quality.
