64 pp. No doubt the finest fighting machine within the Western inventory today, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is hampered by only one real problem: cost! It therefore has met with relatively little export success and such belongs to a very elite club. The Eagle was conceived as a result of a two-year study including two six-month studies by industry, to find a fighter replacement for the Douglas F-4 Phantom in the counter-air threat role. The concept called for an aircraft that was capable of meeting the 'Beyond Visual Range' (BVR) intercept as well as having the ability to counter the close-air threat. Arising from this study came the 'F-X fighter' which ultimately became the F-15 Eagle that we know and respect so well today.
