vi, 141 pp. Holbrook was an advocate of vegetarianism associated with the physical culture movement and natural hygiene. In this work "Holbrook reviews the anatomy and physiology of the liver in his first several chapters before considering his principal topic, i.e., 'derangements of the liver.' He discusses the symptoms of torpid liver (e.g. costiveness, loss of appetite, headache, depression, etc.), and the diseases that may result, particularly those of the nerves and heart. In curing derangements of the liver Holbrook recommends changes in diet, air, exercise, clothing, alcohol consumption, etc. Holbrook's discussion of the liver is followed by a reprint of the chapter entitled 'Influence of mental cultivation in producing dyspepsia' (p. [95]-108) from Amariah Brigham's Remarks on the Influence of Mental Cultivation and Excitement upon the Health. The book concludes with Holbrook's essay on headache." (Hoolihan 1687)
