A history of John Marshall High School and the old Tenth Ward (i.e., the Maplewood neighborhood), which is unique in its treatment of the history of a specific local neighborhood. Written by an alumnus of the University of Rochester. Over the past decade, several of my colleagues have looked at me quizzically when I informed them that I was writing 'a history of John Marshall High School and the old Tenth Ward.' They wondered, as I often have, 'Why write such a thing in the first place.' The text of this book is divided into two sections. Part One is a fairly thorough history of Kodak/John Marshall High school and is organized chronologically. Part Two deals with the neighborhood and falls far short of being a complete and definitive history. Includes: Preface; Acknowledgments; KODAK HIGH SCHOOL / JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL: Early High School Education for Rochesterians; Kodak High School Emerges for a Brief Stay (1915-26); Life in the Film Factory (1926-35); A Shiny New Home (1935-1941); World War II Affects All (1941-1945); Return to Normalcy; Last Quarter of the Snyder Era; On a New Course; A Neighborhood School No Longer; A Native Son Takes the Helm; A Period of Rapid Change; Principals; Selected Faculty; Sports Memories; This and That; THE MAPLEWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD: Earliest Human Activity; Glimpses of the Nineteenth Century; A Neighborhood in Perpetual Transition; The Ward Evolves: Activities and Organizations; Transportation; Theaters; Businesses; The Tenth Ward's Public Elementary Schools; This and That; SOME FINAL THOUGHTS: Echoes of Yesteryear; Bibliography.
