Volumes 1 and 2 of a 3-volume set. V. 1 missing #1 of 32 plates, all others present, vol. 2 includes all 36 plates, with one gathering loose. Boards rubbed with minor loss from spine head of second volume, ink name and rank of former owner (David Allen, Capt. 12th Mass. Vols.) and small bookseller plate on front endpapers of each volume.

5 3/8 x 3 5/8. Black leather spines over olive cloth with blind-stamped borders and eagle emblems, mirrored on spine in gilt. A reference used by soldiers during the American Civil War, designed to be kept in pockets while in the field. Includes illustrations of soldiers, diagrams of troop formations, and even musical tablature for songs used on the march. Captain David Allen, Jr. (1829-1864) was a member of the 12th Massachusetts Infantry who enrolled on April 19, 1861 and was commissioned and mustered as Captain of Company K. He succeeded Major Burbank in command of the Regiment on September 17th, and was seriously wounded in action there. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment on October 1862. He was again wounded, at Fredericksburg in December, and commanded the Regiment at Gettysburg after Colonel Bates was hit. He joined the staff of Brigadier General Robinson (2nd Division 1st Corps) after Gettysburg on July 13th, 1863 and was killed in action on May 5th, 1864 in the Wilderness, Virginia.
