"Sensations, ideas, feelings, and strivings form the well-known facts, the whole of which, subject to future examination, we are accustomed to describe as the life of a peculiar being, the soul. Our scientific needs would be fully satisfied if, first, following the guidance of observation, we could fully represent all the individual constituents of this life, and the general forms of their connection; if, further, we could name the nature of the subject of this whole life, as well as the operative forces and conditions by which the whole of this life is brought about, and compelled to contain every experientially known form of its course; if we could finally give the rational sense for which all this is there, or the job that soul life has to fulfill in general in the world as a whole. Since the last problem does not admit of a solution in a strictly scientific form, but the treatment of the first can easily be combined with that of the second, the essential question with which we are concerned is this: "Under what conditions, and by what forces Do the individual processes of spiritual life arise, how do they combine and modify one another and bring about the whole of spiritual life through this interaction?"
