Reply to a Pamphlet Recently Circulated by Mr. Edward Brooks.

Boston: Freeman and Bolles, 1848. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Good. Item #2324137

First edition (Sabin 42465). OCLC only notes digital copies in institutional holdings. Stain along bottom edge of a few pages, edges rubbed with minor loss from spine head and foot, wrappers toned, ink stamp of New England Historical-Genealogical Society on first text page, ink New York State Library stamp on front wrapper, ink name on title page.

211 pp. A response to controversy over the suicide of John Wright Boott, by the first treasurer of Merrimack Manufacturing Company and Boott Cotton Mill, who was also a trustee of the Lowell Institute. Brooks issued a response to this in 1851, spurred by the unsuccessful attempt to set aside Boott's will, which named Lowell as his estate's executor. An interesting example of individuals feuding by way of printed and publicly circulated documents, which was common in the 19th century.
