1889 shoulder strap edition, following the 1887 brown cloth original. Appears to be the first printing in this binding, with another following in the 1890s. Hinges reinforced with archival mending tissue, three light spots on top edge, minor wear to edges with corners slightly exposed. Binding tight and square, text clean and unmarked.
xiii, 702 pp. 8vo. Frontispiece of Custer, 25 plates by Frederic Remington and A. Berghaus (including maps of Kansas and Texas in 1866 and 1886), 3 illustrations in text. The second (and considered by some the best) of three books written after Custer's infamous Last Stand, by his wife of twelve years, whose writings were an attempt to repair the considerable damage Custer's final battle did to his reputation. In addition to being an authoritative representation of Custer as a man and a military commander, this is also a useful firsthand report of conditions in Union encampments of the West during the American Civil War: Elizabeth, unlike many army wives, accompanied her husband during the war.
