A domestic medical guide by Professor of the Principles and Practice of Medicine and Pathology in the Philadelphia University of Medicine and Surgery, who wrote several books on medical cures, homeopathy, surgery, and the history of medicine. While Paine was President of the National Medical Association, editor of the University Journal of Medicine and Surgery, member of the American Historical Society, and Honorary Member of the Academy of Medicine, his professional career was plagued with accusations that the university he worked at was a 'diploma mill,' and he found himself regularly defending himself and the institution against accusations of educational fraud.
