Second edition. Bookplate of Redmond Conyngham on front endpaper of each volume. He was a Princeton graduate who served in the House of Representatives and state senate in Pennsylvania. After political service he ran a print shop and studied history, focusing on Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, which explains his interest in this work, which provides background regarding the group of German immigrants who would become the Pennsylvania 'Dutch.' A couple minor blemishes along board edges.

xviii, 543; 540 pp. Navy blue leather spine and corners, red morocco spine labels, gilt titles and decorations, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Translated from the original German by Sarah Austin. She explains that the original work consists of five volumes, which the author "divided into three epochs... the first is contained in the two following volumes."
