Two volumes in one. 157, ; 58,  pp. Full leather, burgundy morocco spine label, gilt titles and decorations, French marbled endpapers. French text. The author, Guillaume-Hyacinthe Bougeant, was a French Jesuit historian. This work, first published in 1737, which translates as Philosophical Amusements on the Language of the Animals, was controversial enough that he was banned from Paris briefly. His historical and theological works were well-respected, and his comedies were also quite popular.
