First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed but not signed by the author on volume one front flyleaf ('With compliments of author'). The recipient was William D. Doan, author of Birds of West Virginia (1858). One page corner repaired with clear tape (now yellowed), Doan's ink owner stamp and small bookseller plate on endpapers, volume one boards rubbed with corners slightly exposed.

Thomas Gentry was also the author of 'Nests and Eggs of Birds of the United States' and 'The House Sparrow', and a member of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, the Nuttall Ornithological Club, the Davenport Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Scientific Society of the University of Pennsylvania, etc.
