Mama's Little Girl: A Brief Story [with] 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 Photograph of Author and Family

Mount Vernon / Portland: The Bradford Press, 1932. Morang, Alfred. Limited Edition. Soft Cover. Good. Item #2305597

Limited edition, #33 of 75 copies, signed by author on limitation page, and by illustrator beneath frontispiece. Laid in is a photograph, at the center of which appears to be Erskine Caldwell, with the others in the photo ostensibly his family. On the reverse is written 'Back to nature! May 22d - '32' in handwriting that appears quite similar to known examples of Caldwell's ('Back' in particular matches nearly exactly the same word in a 1940 letter auctioned by Heritage). Minor loss from corner of front wrapper and corner of first page, fore edge corners a bit creased.

10, [2] pp. Printed wrappers. An early work, published the same year as Tobacco Road, Caldwell's first major novel. Scarce (25 in OCLC, 1 in trade). Caldwell's writings focused on the problems of poverty and racism in the American South. He is best known for Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre. In the 1930s Caldwell and his wife managed a bookstore in Maine. Given that this work was printed as a limited edition in Maine, it is probable that Caldwell sold the work at his own shop.

Price: $500.00
