The memoirs of Lorenzo Dow (reissue of Howes D441), bound together with an 1842 edition of an account of approximately 10,000 miles of travel throughout the American continent, recounted by Lorenzo Dow through the use of his wife Peggy's detailed journal. Dow's memoirs at one point were only outsold by the Bible. Sabin 20759. Howes D-442. [Vicissitudes] describes one of the most amazing trips ever made by a woman, down the Ohio from Wheeling to Natchez, on the Mississippi, thence overland through the hostile Creek country to the Georgia settlements, Carolina & Virginia. Lorenzo Dow was a Methodist evangelist, and one of the most widely traveled and most eccentric of early American gospel preachers.
