iv, 668 pp. Folio. Twenty-seven issues of The Illustrated London News, bound in one half-leather volume. Green leather spine and corners, gilt titles and rules, marbled boards, edges, and endpapers, five raised spine bands. Numerous engravings throughout (including several with a partial fold-out), with an index of these preceding the periodicals, and an engraved title page preceding that, which states that this volume was released on July 16, 1870. The Illustrated London News was the first illustrated weekly magazine in the world, first published in May of 1842, and ran as a weekly for over 125 years, ceasing publication in 2003 after a period of more limited circulation (though the company still exists as a publishing, content, and digital agency). During its time in business, the publication employed a number of well known artists, including: Sir John Gilbert, Birket Foster, George Cruikshank, W. . Linton, Ebenezer Landells, George Thomas, Edward Duncan, Bruce Bairnsfather, H.M. Bateman, Edmund Blampied, Mabel Lucie Attwell, E.H. Shepherd, Kate Greenaway, W. Heath Robinson, Charles Robinson, George E. Studdy, David Wright, Melton Prior, William Simpson, Frederic Villiers, H. C. Seppings-Wright, Frank Reynolds, Lawson Wood, C. E. Turner, R. Caton Woodville, A. Forestier, Fortunino Matania, Christina Broom, Louis Wain and J. Segrelles. Regular literary contributors included Douglas Jerrold, Richard Garnett, Shirley Brooks, Robert Louis Stevenson, Thomas Hardy, George Augustus Sala, J. M.
