The third book by the author famous for her science fiction and fantasy novels, though she did not begin writing in this genre until 1947 with The People of the Crater (published pseudonymously under the pen name Andrew North), and did not publish a full-length science fiction novel until 1952 (Star Man's Son, 2250 A.D.).  She was the first woman to be Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy, first to be SFWA Grand Master, and first inducted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. She is also notable as the first author to publish a work based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe: Quag Keep, inspired by a game played with D&D creator Gary Gygax in the Greyhawk universe.
