He was editor of the first scientific magazine published in Milan, wrote what is considered to be the first modern biography of Leonardo da Vinci, acted as conservator to the oldest public library in Europe, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana (Ambrosian Library), and discovered there the lost Italian manuscript of Pigafetta on Magellan's voyage, considered by most Magellan scholars as the oldest of four extant manuscripts and the most complete. This work was originally published in 1794, and reprinted quite a few times during Amoretti's life.
