Red Oak: The Osborne & Murphy Company, Art Publishers. Large Hardcover. Very Good / No Jacket. Item #2083653

Boards faintly soiled, front hinge just beginning to weaken, portion of front free endpaper removed, front flyleaf creased. All image pages excellent with no marks, foxing, stains, or toning.

Forty half-tone images photographically reproduced from original photographs, and copper plate etchings by various artists. In 1888, two enterprising young men, Edmond Osborne and Thomas D. Murphy, purchased a woodcut of the Montgomery County Courthouse that was under construction at the time. To offset the expense of the woodcut, they decided to sell advertising around the picture and add a calendar pad. Because of their venture, Red Oak became known as the birthplace of the art calendar industry. The business became a major industry in Red Oak, with hundreds of employees and salesmen and a branch in London. Murphy also continued as publisher of The Red Oak Express.
