 7.  New EZ Method for Mandolin--Self Instruction and Teachers Use

1959 Wm. J. Smith Music Co. Inc., Good

Moderate shelf wear. A mandolin is a small, stringed musical instrument which is plucked, strummed or a combination of both. It is descended from the mandora. It has eight metal strings in four pairs (courses) that are plucked with a plectrum. It has a body with a teardrop-shaped soundtable (i.e. face), or one that is essentially oval in shape, with a soundhole, or soundholes, of varying shapes that are open and not latticed. The most common tuning for the mandolin is in fifths, the same as for the violin (G-D-A-E, lowest to highest). Guitarists may occasionally tune a mandolin to mimic a portion of the intervals on a standard guitar tuning to achieve familiar fretting patterns. -- Wikipedia

 10.  Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering Volume 74: Spring Meeting 1996 New Orleans, Louisiana (PMSE)

0841232547

1996 American Chemical Society, Good

Spine faded, light wear to spine base. Contains the proceedings of the American Chemical Society Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering from their spring meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1996. The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a learned society (professional association) based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has over 160,000 members at all degree-levels and in all fields of chemistry, chemical engineering and related fields. The ACS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The ACS holds national meetings twice a year covering the complete field of chemistry, plus dozens of smaller conferences in specific fields. Its publications division produces several scholarly journals including the Journal of the American Chemical Society. The primary source of income of the ACS is the Chemical Abstracts Service and its publications. Chemical & Engineering News is the weekly news magazine published by the American Chemical Society and sent to all members. The ACS membership is organized into 189 geographical Local Sections and 33 Technical Divisions. The American Chemical Society had it origins in a small group of 35 chemists that met on April 6, 1876 at the University Building in the present day New York University.[1] Although at that time there was an American science society (American Association for the Advancement of Science) the growth of chemistry prompted those assembled, including William H. Nichols, under the direction of Professor Charles F. Chandler of the Columbia School of Mines to found the American Chemical Society. The society Chandler said, would “prove a powerful and healthy stimulus to original research, … would awaken and develop much talent now wasting in isolation, … [bring] members of the association into closer union, and ensure a better appreciation of our science and its students on the part of the general public. A formal vote for organization was taken, a constitution was adopted, and officers were selected. Chandlers was an obvious choice as president since had been instrumental leadership in establishing the society, however, he felt that the New York University Professor John William Draper had the reputation as a scientist to lead a national organization. At the age of 65 John William Draper was elected as the first president of the American Chemical Society and the headquarters was located in New York. Draper’s presidency was important more due to his name and reputation and than his active participation in the society. The American Chemical Society also sponsors the United States National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO), a contest used to select the four-member team that represents the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). The ACS Division of Chemical Education provides standardized tests for various subfields of chemistry. The two most commonly-used tests are the undergraduate-level tests for general and organic chemistry. Each of these tests consists of 70 multiple-choice questions, and gives students 110 minutes to complete the exam. The American Chemical Society grants membership to undergraduates as student affiliates. Any university may start its own chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) and receive benefits of undergraduate participation in regional conferences and discounts on ACS publications. Since the inception of National Center for Biotechnology Information's open access PubChem chemical compound database initiative, ACS has actively lobbied NCBI and its supervising agencies to stop the database development effort. ACS markets its own subscription- and pay-based Chemical Abstracts Service. In a May 23, 2005, press-release, the ACS stated: The ACS believes strongly that the Federal Government should not seek to become a taxpayer supported publisher. By collecting, organizing, and disseminating small molecule information whose creation it has not funded and which duplicates CAS services, NIH has started ominously, down the path to unfettered scientific publishing... The journal Nature reported that ACS had hired a public relations firm, Dezenhall Resources, to try and halt the open access movement. Scientific American later reported that ACS had spent over $200,000 to hire Wexler & Walker Public Policy Association to lobby against open access. -- Wikipedia

 13.  Significance of Baha'u'llah's Revelation

1989 Baha'i Publishing Trust, Good

Minor shelf wear. Bahá'u'lláh (ba-haa-ol-laa, Glory of God) (1817 - 1892), born Mírzá H?usayn-`Alí was the founder and prophet of the Bahá'í Faith. He claimed to fulfill the Bábí prophecy of He whom God shall make manifest, but in a broader sense he also claimed to be the supreme Manifestation of God.[1], referring to the fulfillment of the eschatological expectations of a prophetic cycle beginning with Adam, and including Abrahamic religions, as well as Zoroastrianism, the Dharmic religions, and others. Bahá'ís see Bahá'u'lláh as the initiator of a new religion, as Jesus or Muhammad — but also the initiator of a new cycle, like that attributed to Adam. Bahá'u'lláh authored many religious works, most notably the Kitáb-i-Aqdas and the Kitáb-i-Íqán. He died in Bahjí, Palestine, present-day Israel, and is buried there. -- Wikipedia

 17.  Taylor Quality Guitars 1998 Catalog

1998 Taylor Guitars, Very Good

Light shelf wear. Binding tight, pages clean & bright.. Color photographs throughout. Taylor Guitars is an El Cajon California-based luthier, widely known for their quality acoustic guitars. In 1973, at age 18, Bob Taylor began working at American Dream, a small guitar-making shop owned by Sam Radding, where Kurt Listug was already an employee. In 1974 Sam Radding decided to sell the business. Taylor and Listug became partners along with Steve Schemmer and bought American Dream which they renamed Westland Music Company hoping to conjure the image of a larger company in the minds of the public. Needing a more compact logo suitable for the guitars' headstock, the founders decided to change the name to Taylor as it sounded more American than Listug and because as Kurt Listug put it, 'Bob was the real guitar-maker.' Listug became the businessman of the partnership for which he was to prove well suited while Taylor concentrated on design and production. Taylor and Listug expanded their small shop into a major guitar manufacturing company while maintaining creative control and ownership. As of 2008 Taylor Guitars has more than 550 employees. The factory is located in El Cajon, California with worldwide distribution. A second plant has been opened 40 miles away in Tecate, Mexico where the smallest guitars of the Taylor line, the Baby and Big Baby, are made along with the Taylor guitar cases. All other Taylor guitars are made in El Cajon, California. Taylor's corporate office is located in El Cajon, California. Taylor guitars are made with a patented bolt-on neck; the NT neck (new technology). It differs from other necks, whether bolt-on or glued, by supporting the fretboard all the way to the 19th fret with a continuous piece of wood. The standard practice is to support the fretboard up to the fourteenth fret with the unsupported portion being glued to the constantly moving soundboard. The NT neck fits into a pocket on the top of the guitar body with the desired angle being achieved by small, accurately milled neck spacers (shims). After time, some guitars require the neck angle to be realigned (referred to as a neck reset). This process is greatly simplified by allowing the replacement of different sized neck spacers to return the neck to the required angle. Taylor's proprietary pickup system, the Expression System consists of a patented humbucking induction pickup mounted in the neck and a pair of dynamic soundboard transducers wired to an on board preamplifier designed by Rupert Neve. The first generation system was powered by a pair of AA batteries. -- Wikipedia

 18.  Mr. Dooley in Peace and War

0742610985

1899 Small, Maynard & Company, AcceptableNo Jacket

1899 HARD COVER. Moderate shelf wear, Top of spine missing, binding loose-pages intact, pages and covers toned, owner information on first page. Finley Peter Dunne (July 10, 1867 - April 24, 1936) was a Chicago-based U.S. author, writer and humorist. He wrote Mr. Dooley in Peace and War in 1898. Mr. Dooley became one of the first nationally syndicated newspaper features. Set in a South Side Chicago Irish pub, Mr. Dooley, the owner and bartender, would expound upon political and social issues of the day, using the thick verbiage and accent of an Irish immigrant. Dunne's sly humor and political acumen won the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, a frequent target of Mr. Dooley's barbs. Peter Finley Dunne was born in Chicago on July 10, 1867. He was educated in the Chicago public schools (graduating from high school last in his class), then began his newspaper career in Chicago as a newspaper reporter/editor for the Chicago Telegram in 1884, at age 17. He was then with the Chicago News 1884-88, Chicago Times 1888, Chicago Tribune 1889, Chicago Herald 1889, Chicago Journal 1897. Originally named Peter Dunne, to honor his mother, who had died when he was in high school, he took her family name as his middle name some time before 1886, going by PF Dunne, reversed the two names in 1888, for Finley P. Dunne, and later used simply the initials, FP Dunne. His sister, Amelia Dunne Hookway, was a prominent educator and high school principal in Chicago; the former Hookway School was named in her honor. -- Wikipedia. Life is an American magazine that publishes interviews, essays, cartoons, and photos. At one point it sold more than 13.5 million copies a week; today Life is distributed as a free supplement in major U.S. newspapers. It was born in the early 1880s as a humor magazine and sold well during the late 1930s. In the years following World War II, Life was so popular that President Harry S. Truman, Sir Winston Churchill, and Gen. Douglas MacArthur all serialized their memoirs in its pages. Life was the first all-photography U.S. news magazine and dominated the market for more than forty years. Perhaps one of the best-known pictures printed in the magazine was Alfred Eisenstaedt’s shot of a nurse in a sailor’s arms, snapped on August 27, 1945, as they celebrated Victory Over Japan Day in New York City. The magazine’s place in the history of photojournalism is considered its most important contribution to publishing. However, Life did not always have its familiar white type on red field logo. Beginning in 1883 and continuing for 53 years, Life was a general-interest light entertainment magazine, heavy on illustrations, jokes, and social commentary. It attracted some of the greatest writers, editors, and cartoonists of its era. In 1936 it was bought by Henry Luce, publisher of Fortune and Time, and transformed into a news picture magazine. It was wildly successful for two generations before its prestige was diminished by economics and changing tastes. Since 1972, Life has ceased publication twice, only to be brought back to readers in different incarnations. -- Wikipedia

A libretto is the text used in an extended musical work such as an opera, operetta, masque, sacred or secular oratorio and cantata, musical, and ballet. The term 'libretto' is also sometimes used to refer to the text of major liturgical works, such as mass, requiem, and sacred cantata. Libretto (pl. libretti), from Italian, is the diminutive of the word 'libro' (book). A libretto is distinct from a synopsis or scenario of the plot, in that the libretto contains all the words and stage directions, while a synopsis summarizes the plot. The relationship of the librettist (that is, the writer of a libretto) to the composer in the creation of a musical work has varied over the centuries, as have the sources and the writing techniques employed. -- Wikipedia

Abbey, Edward
0345326490

1991 Ballantine Books, Good

Cover edge wear, spine creased, pages toned, ink on first page.. When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah. This is a rare view of a quest to experience nature in its purest form -- the silence, the struggle, the overwhelming beauty. But this is also the gripping, anguished cry of a man of character who challenges the growing exploitation of the wilderness by oil and mining interests, as well as by the tourist industry. Abbey's observations and challenges remain as relevant now as the day he wrote them. Today, Desert Solitaire asks if any of our incalculable natural treasures can be saved before the bulldozers strike again. CONTENTS: Author's Introduction; The First Morning; Solitaire; The Serpents of Paradise; Cliffrose and Bayonets; Polemic: Industrial Tourism and the National Parks; Rocks; Cowboys and Indians; Cowboys and Indians: Part II; Water; The Heat of Noon: Rock and Tree and Cloud; The Moon-Eyed Horse; Down the River; Havasu; The Dead Man at Grandview; Point; Tukuhnivats, the Isand in the Desert; Episodes and Visions; Terra Incognita: Into the Maze; Bedrock and Paradox.

He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1820; studied at Andover Theological Seminary in 1821, 1822, and 1824; was tutor in 1824-1825, and from 1825 to 1829 was professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Amherst College; was licensed to preach by the Hampshire Association in 1826; founded the Mount Vernon School for Young Ladies in Boston in 1829, and was principal of it in 1829-1833; was pastor of Eliot Congregational Church (which he founded), at Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1834-1835; and was, with his brothers, a founder, and in 1843-1851 a principal of Abbott's Institute, and in 1845-1848 of the Mount Vernon School for boys, in New York City. He was a prolific author, writing juvenile fiction, brief histories, biographies, religious books for the general reader, and a few works in popular science. He died in Farmington, Maine, where he had spent part of his time after 1839, and where his brother Samuel Phillips Abbott founded the Abbott School. His Rollo Books, such as Rollo at Work, Rollo at Play, Rollo in Europe, etc., are the best known of his writings, having as their chief characters a representative boy and his associates. In them Abbott did for one or two generations of young American readers a service not unlike that performed earlier, in England and America, by the authors of Evenings at Home, Sandford and Merton, and the Parent's Assistant. His brother, John Stevens Cabot Abbott, was also an author. His sons, Benjamin Vaughan Abbott, Austin Abbott, both eminent lawyers, Lyman Abbott, and Edward Abbott, a clergyman, were also well-known authors. -- Wikipedia. 1926 Brentano's, New York, AcceptableNo Jacket, Ex-Library

Library binding. Usual library marks, light staining on top spine edge and a couple pages, a couple pages beginning to loosen, pages slightly toned. Achmed Abdullah (1881 - 1945), a pseudonym of Alexander Nicholayevitch Romanoff, was a Russian-born writer. He is most noted for his pulp stories of crime, mystery and adventure. He wrote screenplays for some successful films. He was the author of the progressive Chinese drama Chang, an Academy Award nominated film made in 1927. He earned an Academy Award nomination for collaborating on the screenplay to the 1935 film The Lives of a Bengal Lancer. Alexander Nicholayevitch Romanoff was born on May 12, 1881 in Yalta, Russia to the second cousin of Czar Nicholas Romanoff and an Afghan princess. After his mother's attempts to poison her husbund due to partaking in multiple affairs, they divorced, leaving their son, and two other children to their maternal grandparents. At the age of 12, he was sent to Eton; and then to Oxford University to be educated. Although he was born Russian Orthodox, he was raised as a Muslim by his grandparents. Later he would consider himself Roman Catholic. Upon his graduation he joined the British Army, and rose to rank of acting colonel during his 17-year military career. Throughout his military career, he served in India, Afghanistan, Tibet, Africa, China and in Turkey. He served the British-Indian army in India, and was also colonel in a cavalry regiment for one year in the Turkish army as a British spy. He mostly spent the time in the military as a spy because of his wide-knowledge of Oriental and Middle-Eastern customs and religions. He traveled widely in Russia, Europe, Africa, the Middle-East and China and spoke many languages and dialects. He was also made a British citizen by an act of Parliament, and convicted by the Germans during World War I for being a spy. In the early 1910s he emigrated to the United States and eventually became a successful, well-paid writer, playwright and later on, a Hollywood screenwriter. At the time, he became the only British subject to receive membership in the French Academy and he also got a doctorate from the College of El-Azar, Cairo in Koranic Studies. Romanoff was married to Jean Wick, a literary agent, until 1939, when she died. He adopted her daughter Phyllis and then later married again, this time to Rosemary A. Dolan in 1940. In January 1945, Romanoff was entered into Columbia Presbytarian Medical Center and a few months later on May 12, his birthday, he died, from a heart attack. -- Wikipedia

 38.  A Bathtub Built for Two
Abraham, Doc & Kathy; Miller, Luke
Abraham, Darryl B000PUKKAU

2005 George Abraham, Good
Signed by author
SIGNED BY CO-AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR. Single spine crease, minimal shelf wear, otherwise in beautiful condition. A Bathutb Built for Two is a fun look at the lives of George 'Doc' Abraham and his wife, Katy, with stories dating from childhood through 60-plus years of marriage. In it you'll meet a whole cast of characters as endearing as they are entertaining, from the funeral director erroneously suspected of poinsoning his friends to the sidewalk-licking boys out for a taste of homemeade dandelion wine during the Roaring Twenties. Of course, the most endearing characters in the book are Doc and Katy themselves. You'll come to know the incomparable, inseperable pair through many 'snapshots' of small-town life presented throughout. And you'll end up marveling, as I have, that any two people could lead such interest, fufilling lives. Doc and Katy literally finished this book days before Doc's sudden passing in January 2005. He sent me the final story about a week earlier and said, 'Luke, there will never be another Doc and Katy, so it's impotant that we tell our story.' I've had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful couple - and learning from them - for 18 years. I invite you to come to know them, too - through the stories they've so wonderfully related inside.

Israel Abrahams (b. London, November 26, 1858; d. Cambridge, October 6, 1925) was one of the most distinguished Jewish scholars of his generation. He wrote a number of classics on Judaism, most nostably, Jewish Life in the Middle Ages (1896). He was educated at Jews' College, where his father Barnett Abrahams served as principal, and at University College, London. In 1881, he received the degree of MA from the University of London. Abrahams taught secular subjects as well as homiletics at Jews' College, and was appointed senior tutor of that institution in 1900. He was a forceful lecturer and an earnest lay preacher. As honorary secretary of the Jewish Historical Society of England and as a member of the Committee for Training Jewish Teachers, he was very active. He was also a member of the Committee of the Anglo-Jewish Association, and of several other institutions of the community. Abrahams collaborated with Claude Montefiore to write the book Aspects of Judaism, which was published in 1895. His chief works were Jewish Life in the Middle Ages (1896) and Chapters on Jewish Literature (1898). In 1889, he became joint editor of the Jewish Quarterly Review and helped materially to raise the prestige of the publication. He was a prolific contributor to periodical literature, and was especially well known for his articles on literary subjects, which appeared weekly in the Jewish Chronicle under the title of Books and Bookmen. In 1902, after teaching for several years at Jews' College, Abrahams succeeded Solomon Schechter, who was moving to New York to head the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, as reader in Talmudics at Cambridge University. In 1914, he published A Companion to the Authorised Prayer Book, a helpful commentary on and supplement to the prayer book edited by Simeon Singer. Singer himself had intended to write such a work, but died before he had progressed very far. Revised editions appeared in 1922 and 1932. -- Wikipedia

1985 Columbia University Press, Very GoodGood, First Edition

FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING HARDCOVER. Same date on copyright & title pages, no additional printings indicated, $19.95 list price on dust jacket flap. Very good hardcover in good jacket. Jacket laminated with clear tape, crease on rear flap corner. Binding tight, pages clean, bright, & unmarked.. 245 pages. In 1976 the country was shocked and fascinated by a bizarre series of murders in New York City. The killer, known as 'Son of Sam,' stalked his victims after dark, choosing as his prey young women, usually sitting with their dates in parked cars. For one long year, the city lay in the grip of fear. On August 10, 1977 it was finally over. David Berkowitz was arrested, and eventually sentenced to several hundred years behind bars. But the story didn't end there. In March 1979 Dr. David Abrahamsen, a psychiatrist retained by the Brooklyn district attorney to examine Berkowitz -- and the only one to judge him competent to stand trial -- received a letter from the killer. He wanted to tell his whole story to, ironically, the man who pronounced him fit for trial. Confessions of Son of Sam is a probing analysis of the mind of the man responsible for one of the most terrifying and most publicized serial murders of all time. Based on fifty hours of personal interviews with Berkowitz and four hundred pages of personal correspondence with him, it is a unique and compelling portrait of a killer who told all to the psychiatrist he came to know and confide in a man he knew he could not fool. From police interrogations, exhaustive psychological tests, and numerous discussions with Berkowitz's family, friends, former teachers, and others, Abrahamsen unmasks the killers complex personality, weaving both a terrifying psychological profile and a riveting detective story.

 43.  Le Livre De Science Volume I (Avicenne Series, Traductions De Textes Persans) (Logique, Metaphysique)
Achena, Mohammad and Masse, Henri

1955 Les Belles Lettres, Good

FRENCH TEXT. 241 pages. Pages & cover lightly toned, shelf wear, page seems to be missing between copyright page and title page, small one inch tear on front cover at spine. Abu-Ali- al-Husayn ibn Abd Allah ibn Sina (Persian: c. 980 in Bukhara, Khorasan - 1037 in Hamedan), also known as Ibn Seena and commonly known in English by his Latinized name Avicenna was a Persian Muslim polymath and the foremost physician and Islamic philosopher of his time. He was also an astronomer, chemist, Hafiz, logician, mathematician, poet, psychologist, physicist, scientist, Sheikh, soldier, statesman and theologian. Ibn Sina wrote almost 450 treatises on a wide range of subjects, of which around 240 have survived. In particular, 150 of his surviving treatises concentrate on philosophy and 40 of them concentrate on medicine. His most famous works are The Book of Healing, a vast philosophical and scientific encyclopaedia, and The Canon of Medicine, which was a standard medical text at many Islamic and European universities up until the early 19th century. The Canon of Medicine was used as a text-book in the universities of Montpellier and Louvain as late as 1650. Ibn Sina developed a medical system that combined his own personal experience with that of Islamic medicine, the medical system of the Greek physician Galen, Aristotelian metaphysics (Avicenna was one of the main interpreters of Aristotle), and ancient Persian, Mesopotamian and Indian medicine. He was also the founder of Avicennian logic and the philosophical school of Avicennism, which were influential among both Muslim and Scholastic thinkers. Ibn Sina is regarded as a father of early modern medicine, particularly for his introduction of systematic experimentation and quantification into the study of physiology, his discovery of the contagious nature of infectious diseases, the introduction of quarantine to limit the spread of contagious diseases, the introduction of experimental medicine, evidence-based medicine, clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, efficacy tests, clinical pharmacology, neuropsychiatry, risk factor analysis, and the idea of a syndrome, and the importance of dietetics and the influence of climate and environment on health. He is also considered the father of the fundamental concept of momentum in physics, and regarded as a pioneer of aromatherapy. George Sarton, the father of the history of science, wrote in the Introduction to the History of Science: One of the most famous exponents of Muslim universalism and an eminent figure in Islamic learning was Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna (981-1037). For a thousand years he has retained his original renown as one of the greatest thinkers and medical scholars in history. His most important medical works are the Qanun (Canon) and a treatise on Cardiac drugs. The 'Qanun fi-l-Tibb' is an immense encyclopedia of medicine. It contains some of the most illuminating thoughts pertaining to distinction of mediastinitis from pleurisy; contagious nature of phthisis; distribution of diseases by water and soil; careful description of skin troubles; of sexual diseases and perversions; of nervous ailments.

 44.  A Slender Thread: Rediscovering Hope at the Heart of Crisis
Ackerman, Diane
0679771336

1998 Vintage Books / Random House, Inc., Good; 1st Printing

FIRST PRINTING. Single light spine crease, faint crease down front cover, light shelf wear, pages slightly toned. Diane Ackerman, the prizewinning, bestselling author of A Natural History of the Senses, volunteers every week at a local crisis center, where people call in anonymously, strung out, desperate, imploring, or hostile, holding on to hope through a phone line. Her secret life spent with callers is shocking, funny, stressful, healing, and inspiring. So, too, is her life in her backyard, where the wild creatures she observes so closely are living their own lives on the edge. In her distinctive style (one reviewer calls it a 'glorious tumult'), she weaves these parallel threads into a book that is an astonishment. Using powerful stories of the human spirit set against a backdrop of the natural world she knows so well, Ackerman takes us with her on her travels between those intensely fascinating realms. A Slender Thread is bewitchingly like her previous, widely admired books. As ever, she is sensitive to her surroundings and to other creatures; poetic, passionate, amusing; blessed with a richly furnished mind that makes leaps of imagination and insight; adept at drawing on science, literature, history, psychology, and the immediate moment -- and yet this book is dramatically different from the rest of her writing. Deeply personal and intimate, it merges her own story with the stories of others, and shares her private struggles and triumphs as well as her joyous immersion in life. We learn why many hummingbirds die in their sleep, of a distraught caller whose drunken husband is stuck in the chimney singing Irish songs, of animal suicides, of an eighty-five-year-old belly dancer, of a young woman who flees her marriage and spins an elaborate fantasy life in which she captains a team of superheroes who travel the world righting its many wrongs, of the evolution of depression and anxiety as well as of our most cherished emotions, of Winston Churchill's horrifying secret, of the beauty of shade, of the hidden costs of creativity, and hundreds of other truths about being human. In the course of a year, almost everything dangerous or poignant that can happen to human beings prompts a call to a crisis center -- from depression, suicide, and murder to all the trials, uncertainties, and conflicts of love. A Slender Thread is a compelling and nakedly autobiographical book, taking us deep into the heart of darkness and light.

 45.  Jaguar of Sweet Laughter: New and Selected Poems
Ackerman, Diane
0679743049

1993 Vintage Press, Good

SIGNED TRADE PAPERBACK. Minor cover edge wear, some page toning, otherwise in great condition. In A Natural History of the Senses Diane Ackerman revealed herself as a naturalist who writes with the sensuous immediately of a great poet. Now Jaguar of Sweet Laughter presents the work of a poet with the precise and wondering eye of a gifted naturalist. Ackermans's Olympian vision records and transforms landscapes from Amazonia to Antarctica, while her imaginative empathy penetrates the otherness of hummingbirds, deer, and trilobites. But even as they draw readers into the wild heart of nature, Ackerman's poems are indelible reminders of what it is to be a human being -- the jaguar of sweet laughter that, according to Mayan mythology, astonished the world because it was the first animal to speak.

 47.  Plato Papers: First Edition
Ackroyd, Peter
0385497687

2000 Nan A. Talese / Doubleday, GoodGood, First Edition

2000 FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING HARDCOVER. 'First Edition' stated on copyright page with full number line (1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2), $21.95 list price on front dust jacket flap. Minor dust jacket edge wear, pages slightly toned. At the turn of the thirty-eighth century, London's greatest orator, Plato, regularly delivers bravura public lectures on the long, tumultuous history of what is now a tranquil city. Plato focuses particularly on the obscured and confusing era that began in A.D. 1500, which he calls the Age of Mouldwarp. Basing his work on an incomplete archaeological record, Plato pieces scraps of evidence together into a semicoherant whole. He lectures on the clown Sigmund Freud's comic masterpiece, Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconcious, and on the prolific author Charles D.'s greatest novel, The Origin of Species. And he explores the confusing rituals of Mouldwarp, including the cult of webs and nets that covered and enslaved the population. In approximately A.D. 2300, when the sun whent out and the planet fell into a thoughsand years of darkness, the Age of ouldwarp came to a close, and the dark Age of Witspell began. But this epoch holds little interest for Plato, and in the midst of his public performances he beings a dialogue with his soul that leads him closer to the citizens of Mouldwarp than any strict historical inquiry might allow. As with the best of Ackroyd's fiction, The Plato Papers tread a thin line between fantasy and biography, the genre of which Ackroyd is a heralded master. It is at once remarkably funny and erudite, a brilliant and entertaining portrayal of the ways in which the future is imagined, the present absorbed, and the past misrepresented. The Plato Papers is a tour de force of wisdom and wit that enlists all of Ackroy'ds most wonderful skills and talents in a truse masterpiece, brimming with delights and insights.

EX-LIBRARY. Usual library markings, otherwise very good. Rear endpaper removed. Sukarno (June 6, 1901 - June 21, 1970) was the first President of Indonesia. He helped the country win its independence from the Netherlands and was President from 1945 to 1967, presiding with mixed success over the country's turbulent transition to independence. Sukarno was forced from power by one of his generals, Suharto, who formally became President in March 1967. The spelling Sukarno has been official in Indonesia since 1947 but the older spelling Soekarno is still frequently used, mainly because he signed his signature in the old spelling.
